PrEP Awareness, Use, Intention to Use, and Information Source Among Geosocial Networking Application Users in Mexico in 2018–2019

Summary

The paper «PrEP Awareness, Use, Intention to Use, and Information Source Among Geosocial Networking Application Users in Mexico in 2018–2019» explores the levels of awareness, actual usage, intentions to use, and sources of information regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among users of geosocial networking apps in Mexico. Conducted as a cross-sectional study, it specifically targets the app user demographic to understand their engagement with PrEP as a preventive measure against HIV. The research findings highlight that while awareness of PrEP is relatively high among this group, actual usage rates are considerably lower, pointing to potential barriers in access and acceptance of the treatment.

The study also seeks to explore  the sources from which users receive their information about PrEP, revealing that digital platforms, healthcare providers, and community networks serve as key mediums of information dissemination. The paper suggests that increasing the effectiveness of these channels could enhance understanding and uptake of PrEP. It calls for more comprehensive health communication strategies that not only promote awareness but also address misconceptions and logistical barriers to access. By aligning health promotion with the specific consumption patterns and preferences of the geosocial app-using community, the paper advocates for a more tailored approach to public health interventions in Mexico.
